Fan Review of BABYMETAL performance at Yokohama Arena supporting Guns N' Roses

BABYMETAL's 2nd activity of 2017 was playing 4 shows with Guns N' Roses in Japan and this is a review of the 3rd show of the tour. If you remember Guns N' Roses/Metallica double headlining tour in the early 90's, BABYMETAL opening for both bands in 2 weeks is a curious coincidence.

Yokohama Arena is a 17,000-capacity venue.

13 shows on the South American leg of Guns N' Roses' current tour sold 565,000 tickets so average attendance was approximately 43,000. Moreover, BABYMETAL's own 2 Red Night/Black Night extravaganza at Tokyo Dome in September sold 110,000 tickets. So this was an opportunity for both bands' fans to see them at a relatively small venue. It's been a while since I came here last time and I was actually surprised that it's smaller than I remembered. This was my 3rd BABYMETAL gig and the closest to the stage.

BABYMETAL appeared on stage at 6:30 pm.

1. BABYMETAL DEATH

2. Doki Doki Morning

3. Catch Me If You Can (with Kami intro)

4. Megitsune

5. Karate

6. Gimme Chocolate!

They opened with "BABYMETAL DEATH" that was welcomed by loud sing-a-long. Compared to Seoul, they apparently had a home advantage. The sound quality was much better that might be due to their familiarity with the venue (they played here in 2015) and the audience was more into BABYMETAL.

Leda played intro of "Sweet Child O' Mine" during Kami section of "CMIYC". Now it has become a BABYMETAL tradition to pay homage to headliner that's really fun and "CMIYC" is choreography-wise one of their best songs that always makes fans smile.

Though he played 2 previous shows of the tour, BOH was absent tonight. Supposedly he was busy rehearsing for 2 night stint at the same arena 3 days later.. Hardcore fans know he is a conductor of Kami Band and, for casual fans, he is the most recognizable member. Hope his absence won't happen too many times.

Su-metal demanded a "wow-wow-wow" call and response during "Karate" and received great crowd reaction.

They ditched call and response from "Gimme Chocolate!" both in Seoul and tonight. As they played limited time, 2 songs with call and response should have been too many. Unfortunately I've never heard it live and look forward to It resurfacing at future headlining shows. Anyway, wrapping up the show with their most famous song worked very well. I was literally sweating!

Seeing Axl, Slash and Duff on stage together for the very first time in my life, I was left with mixed feelings. Better late than never, but it would have been much better if it had happened 15 years earlier.
